Who owns the photographs

Unless a credit line under the image says otherwise, every photograph and video on this site was taken by me, Caro Santamaria. I own the copyright to them. They are not stock images and they are not free to use.

Using an image

If you want to use one of my photographs, write to me at caro@carosantamariaocean.com and tell me two things: the page the image is on, and where and how you want to use it. Print, a website, social media, a campaign and an editorial article are all different uses, so the terms depend on what you need.

Brands, dive operators and publications can also start from the work with me page, which covers commissioned photography and video alongside licensing of existing work.

Please ask first. A credit and a link are lovely, but they are not a licence on their own.

Images by other photographers

A small number of articles use photographs I did not take, mostly for species or places I have not yet photographed myself. Those images carry a visible credit under the photograph naming the photographer and the platform they come from, either Unsplash or The Ocean Agency's Ocean Image Bank.

I cannot license those images to you. If you want to use one, go to the photographer or the platform named in the credit and follow their terms.

Metadata

My own images carry their credit and licensing information inside the file itself, so it travels with the photograph rather than living only on this page. If you have received one of my images from somewhere else, that metadata will tell you where it came from.

Something already published?

If you have used one of my photographs without asking, email me. In most cases this ends with a licence and a credit rather than anything more dramatic, and I would much rather sort it out that way.
